Jenna Dewan is one of those rare cases in Hollywood, where a backup dancer becomes a star. After years of dance training throughout her childhood, her professional career began in 2000 when Janet Jackson hired her for the music video for "Doesn't Really Matter." That relationship continued through the "All for You" music video and eventually, the All For You Tour in 2001 and Janet Jackson: Live in Hawaii in 2002.
Her career with major musical artists like P!nk, Nelly, *NSYNC, Missy Elliott and Christina Aguilera flourished, but Dewan was about to rocket into major stardom with one movie role, Nora Clark, in the 2006 dance film, Step Up. It was also on that film that she met, and eventually married co-star Channing Tatum. The duo had a daughter, Everly, in 2013.
Dewan never left dance behind, though. She often appeared as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance over the years and offered critical advice to young dancers auditioning and competing the show. At the Season 12 finale, she performed a duet with Season 2 runner-up and choreographer, Travis Wall.
In 2017, Dewan took a chance on a new dance show produced by Jennifer Lopez called World of Dance. The NBC reality competition show was a big hit for the network and showcased her talents as a TV host. She remained with the series for two seasons until a scheduling conflict with another show prevented her from joining Season 3. She returned to World of Dance in Season 3 as a mentor to the Junior Team Division competitors before The Cut round.
She also jumped behind the scenes as an executive producer, along with ex-husband Channing Tatum and director/choreographer Adam Shankman, on YouTube Premium's Step Up: High Water. The series lasted two seasons and followed the journey of twins trying to succeed in a challenging performing arts high school in Atlanta.
Dewan is also a part of Netflix’s new series, Soundtrack. The musical drama follows the love lives of a group of Millennials living in Los Angeles. Dewan plays Joanna Kassem, a dancer and young professional, who is questioning modern love. The show also stars Madeleine Stowe, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Campbell Scott, Paul James and Callie Hernandez. Soundtrack premieres Wednesday, Dec. 18.
That's not the only the dance show Dewan will be a part of in December. She’s diving back into the reality dance competition realm by joining the cast of FOX's new show, Flirty Dancing.
Based off of U.K. series, the dance-dating show has a contestant work with top-level choreographers and learn two dances for two blind dates. The dates' first interaction is through movement and eye contact. Not only will Dewan mentor the contestants, but she will offer dance advice to them before their big dance-date moment. The show premieres Sunday, Dec. 29.
Dewan's next project is a new bundle of joy. She announced her pregnancy with boyfriend and Broadway star Steve Kazee back in September.
