Dance With Me Studios (DWM), home of Maksim and Valentin Chmerkovskiy, is widely-known for quality dance instruction in a family atmosphere. Next month though, people will have another opportunity to watch some of DWM’s professional staff showcase their talents in the second run of 'Dancing in the Crowd.' From the creators of 'Sway: A Dance Trilogy,' 'Dancing in the Crowd' explores the many ways people can connect with each other while being in a crowd full of strangers.
On January 26, 2019, 'Dancing in the Crowd' will return to Melrose Ballroom in New York, but this time the show will feature some extra elements. Show creator David Thomas Moore said the most obvious change in this second run is the addition of a guest appearance by two-time Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) and World Latin Champion Valentin Chmerkovskiy. “As one of Dance With Me's owners, Val is obviously a huge part of the Dance With Me family, so to have him be on stage with us is a huge thrill for the cast and really raises the overall performance level of the show,” commented Moore. Beyond that, artistic elements were tweaked and upgraded this time around, but Moore promises that everyone’s favorite routines are still part of the show. And, of course, there are a few special surprises that will remain a secret until show day.
According to Moore, the cast itself was the main inspiration for this show. “Unlike many shows that are created and then cast to match its artistic vision, this show was created for the very dancers who would perform it - namely the Dance With Me instructors. I realized that there was a wonderfully broad range of dance styles (and personality styles) our teachers could present as performers. I wanted to highlight that diversity,” said Moore. Throughout 'Dancing in the Crowd,' the cast’s performances are centered around the concept of people rushing through life. When we rush through life, the people around us become little more than obstacles; they are just a crowd of blank faces to pass through. The show asks what would happen if we stopped and looked a little closer. What if we discovered that the experiences and emotions we all share weave us together in ways we had not considered?
'Dancing in the Crowd' features choreography from So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) finalists Koine “Koko” Iwasaki and Christopher “Kiki” Nyemchek, jazz dance superstar Emily Crouch, and from Moore himself. This production is described as part theatre, part avant-garde dance project, and part interactive audience. It’s guaranteed to make you think, make you smile, and make you want to dance!

Not only does this show bring its audience together but, much like its predecessor 'Sway: A Dance Trilogy,' it brings the whole DWM family together. From the creative team, to the cast, to costuming, production, and marketing, everyone at DWM is involved. Additionally, the show wouldn’t be the same without its biggest supporters, the DWM students. These students have so much pride when they watch their instructors perform on stage, which, in turn, fuels the instructors' performances and makes this show extra special for everyone involved.

On a side note, I was lucky enough to see DWM’s first production, 'SWAY: A Dance Trilogy,' a few times and it was such a top-notch production that I know Dancing in the Crowd is not to be missed!
