The moment Eddie Hoyt's video package began on Monday night's episode of So You Think You CanDance, we knew it was going to be emotional. He exited Season 15 in tears when the judges let him know that it wasn't his year and sometimes that rejection makes contestants fight even harder to come back the following season.
With so many changes in 12 months, from his brave coming out on national TV to moving across the country to change up his living, work and training situation, Hoyt was ready for the challenge. By spending the year teaching and training at Center Stage Performing Arts Studio in Orem, Utah, Hoyt joined the list of notable dancers who have come out of that studio — Ashly Costa, Julianne Hough, Jenna Johnson and Hefa Tuita. That's only a small list from the studio that was named "Studio of the Year" just days ago at The Dance Awards.
Hoyt walked back onto that stage with new confidence and a freestyle to "If You Want Love.”. He opened his heart to the judges and the audience and just danced. The room went silent as Hoyt poured every emotion through each sound from his feet. It's not often a contestant makes you cry over a tap routine.
Even though the television timeline makes it look like Hoyt was the last dancer on the last day — that spot was reserved for Vlad Kvartin — the audition happened the day before the media arrived during this round. MaryMurphy ran up to Dance Network and revealed what she had witnessed the day before. The audition was already SYTYCD legend.
"Little Eddie Hoyt is back and he made me sob," Murphy shared with Dance Network. "I literally lost my cookies. That kid when he came back, he danced tap with such emotion."
Hoyt's fighting spirit was inspiring to see on that SYTYCD stage, but the tough work is ahead with The Academy. Will that same grit show up during the time it counts the most? Hopefully, he will remember this moment and his final words of Judges Auditions, "This is a dream come true, not many people get second chances."
